About Prairie+

Concrete Copilot analyzes historical and real-time data, from raw materials to field performance results, and evaluates how changes to a mix affect strength, global warming potential (GWP), and cost. What once took weeks of iteration can now be explored in a fraction of the time, with accuracy that our technical team has put to the test on real projects.

The technology is powerful, and the approach behind it is deliberate. Our team reviews, validates, and approves every mix recommendation before production. This follows our VC Way principle of Acting with Ownership: the tools get better, and our people stay accountable. “We do not give control to the machine. The system makes recommendations, but every mix is reviewed, validated, and approved by our technical team before a single cubic yard is produced,” says Luana Scheifer, Technical Services Manager at Prairie Materials.

For projects with aggressive sustainability targets, sometimes requiring 30, 40, or even 50 percent reductions in GWP compared to industry averages, Concrete Copilot gives our team the data and confidence to meet those goals without compromising structural performance. Prairie+ currently offers more than 50 eco-ready mix designs, with approximately 30 percent actively produced using AI-optimized designs. The line has been applied on projects ranging from everyday cash-on-delivery orders to landmark infrastructure builds across Northern and Central Illinois.

Practical Performance

Lower carbon does not mean lower standards. Prairie+ mixes are designed to perform like the mixes you are used to. Project teams get the environmental documentation their projects require and a material that performs the way concrete should.

Prairie+ in the Field: Prologis Cicero

The Prologis warehouse at 5301 W Roosevelt Rd in Cicero, Illinois, is the clearest example of what Prairie+ delivers at scale. The 400,000 square foot facility required concrete that could meet strict lower-carbon standards across a multi-month pour schedule, with direct highway access and no margin for specification uncertainty.

Nearly the entire project, 99.6 percent of the total pour, used Prairie+ low-carbon mix designs, eliminating an estimated 721 tons of CO2 compared to a conventional mix of equivalent performance.

EPDs Are Available 

An Environmental Product Declaration is a verified, standardized document that transparently communicates the environmental impact of a product throughout its entire life cycle. Often described as a “nutrition label” for the environment, it quantifies metrics like greenhouse gas emissions, water usage, and energy consumption. Prairie+ offers EPDs upon request so customers can review concrete performance data aligned with National Ready Mixed Concrete Association standards.

Prairie+ ensures the environmental details customers need are available when they matter most.

Frequently Asked Questions

Prairie+ gives designers, developers, and contractors access to concrete mixes that are designed to lower carbon impact while still meeting the performance requirements of the project. Concrete remains a durable material for long-life buildings, and Prairie+ helps teams make that choice with more environmental information in hand. On average, these mixes can save about 25 pounds of carbon dioxide per cubic yard of concrete.

The carbon dioxide is captured by industrial gas suppliers, purified, and delivered for use in the concrete process. Once it is introduced into the mix, it becomes part of a mineral that stays bound within the concrete. It does not return to the atmosphere in the same form.

Prairie+ may support LEED project goals by providing Environmental Product Declarations and carbon-reduction data that can be used during documentation review. It may contribute toward Materials and Resources credits depending on the project approach and overall specifications. Final credit eligibility depends on the full project design and documentation package.

Yes. Prairie+ and its partners evaluate the added carbon involved in collection, purification, distribution, and production. That information is weighed against the carbon reduction achieved in the mix, so project teams can review the full picture rather than a partial one.

No. Prairie+ is designed so that finish, color, and texture remain consistent with conventional concrete used for similar applications.

Once the carbon dioxide is introduced into concrete, it converts into a calcium carbonate mineral and stays locked in the material. If the concrete is later demolished, the material can be crushed and reused as aggregate, but the carbon dioxide is no longer present as a gas.

No. The mixes are intended to maintain hardened properties such as durability, density, pH, freeze-thaw performance, temperature, texture, and color.

Prairie+ is developed so that finishing remains familiar for crews working with the material. Testing and field use suggest no meaningful difference in finish handling compared with conventional concrete.

Yes. Prairie+ is intended for project teams that need eco-ready options for commercial work, including projects with specific performance and documentation requirements. EPDs and benchmark data can help support specification review.

Prairie+ is not designed to slow production or disrupt construction schedules. In most cases, cycle time is unchanged, and set time is generally considered comparable to conventional mixes.
