FlowFill™ for Easier Backfill

FlowFill™ is Prairie Materials’ flowable fill solution for projects that call for efficient backfill without the work and uncertainty of traditional compaction. It is designed to reach hard-to-access areas, reduce in-place costs, and fill holes quickly while helping avoid settlement issues that can lead to callbacks later. For crews working in trenches, around underground structures, or in unstable soil conditions, this can make the job simpler from the start.

Unlike compacted fill, FlowFill™ does not need to be placed in lifts, tamped, or compacted. The material can be delivered, poured, and left to do its work, which helps save time and removes the need for compacting equipment in areas where access is limited or conditions are difficult.

Why FlowFill™ Works

FlowFill™ is stronger than soil and is able to support pavement and other structures, which makes it useful where stable support matters more than dense mechanical compaction. It can also be made pumpable for difficult reaches, giving project teams more flexibility when the site layout makes direct placement a challenge. That combination of flow, support, and ease of placement makes it well-suited for a wide range of civil and utility applications.

The mix can be designed to stay within maximum excavatable strength limits, with published strength options ranging from 50 to 800 pounds per square inch. That means the material can be selected for the job at hand and remain easy to dig out later if future access is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

FlowFill™ removes the need for mechanical compaction, reduces the equipment required on site, and helps fill voids more quickly. It is also designed to help reduce settlement-related callbacks because it will not settle over time in the same way as uncompacted soil backfill.

Yes. FlowFill™ can be designed to stay within maximum excavatable strength limits, with strengths ranging from 50 to 800 pounds per square inch.

Yes. FlowFill™ can be made pumpable for difficult areas that are hard to reach with direct truck placement.

No. FlowFill™ eliminates the need for compaction and does not require placing in lifts, tamping, or compacting.

FlowFill™ is commonly used for backfill in trenches, around underground structures, and in areas where compaction is difficult or unsafe. It can also be used where a material needs to flow into place and provide stable support after placement.
